Home Addition Renovation FAQ

What is the value in chosing Monk Renovations as your home renovation contractor?

Monk Renovations brings design, permitting, and construction together under one roof, so you get a smooth, project management process from start to finish. One big difference is having engineering support in-house, which makes all the difference throughout the renovation process — combined with our design team and trusted trades, every detail is handled with quality and code compliance in mind, giving you a stress-free renovation and results built to last.

How do I know if a home addition is even worth it vs. just moving?

Every home and situation is different. While we can provide a rough budget, the best way to determine whether an addition is worth the investment is through a detailed design and accurate estimate. This gives you the information you need to compare the cost of renovating with the cost of moving and make the best decision for you and your family.

Is it cheaper to build up or build out for a home addition?

Building out is usually more cost-effective, since it avoids the structural work needed to support a second story. But building up can be worth it if your lot is small or you want to keep your yard space. The right choice depends on your site and goals, so we're happy to talk it through in a consultation.

Do I need to move out during a home addition?

Usually not. Most home additions let you stay in your house, especially if the work is contained to a new footprint. There may be some noise, dust, or temporary utility interruptions, and if the addition connects directly to existing living space, you might need to relocate for short stretches during key phases. We'll walk you through what to expect for your specific project.

What is your process for dealing with unforeseen challenges during a renovation?

Renovations can sometimes uncover unexpected issues. When that happens, we believe clear communication and transparency are essential. We identify the problem, explain your options, provide a detailed estimate for any additional work, and discuss everything with you before moving forward. Our goal is to keep you informed and ensure there are no surprises.

What foundation type is best for a home addition in Halifax?

It depends on your site conditions. Screw piles are popular for additions since they install quickly with minimal excavation and can go right next to your existing foundation. A poured concrete foundation is better when you need a full basement or matching height. Either way, it needs to sit below Nova Scotia's frost line. Our team can assess your site and recommend the best fit.

Home Addition Process

1. Connect

We begin with an in-home consultation to assess your home, discuss your vision, and understand your goals, lifestyle, and budget.

We'll review your existing home, explore possibilities and determine the best approach for your addition.

2. Create

Your estimator works closely with our design team to develop a preliminary addition design and prepare a detailed estimate.

We take the time to ensure the proposed layout complements your existing home while meeting your functional needs, budget, and project goals.

3. Plan

Once you decide to move forward with MONK Renovations, you'll receive our MONK Next Steps, outlining your project timeline, introducing your dedicated project coordination team, and providing the selections required before construction begins.

Our design team works closely with our in-house engineers to develop and refine your addition design, ensuring it is both functional and structurally sound. Once the design has been finalized and approved, we'll guide you through selecting the finishes and materials for your new space. Before any orders are placed, you'll receive a complete summary of your selections for review and approval, ensuring every detail is finalized with confidence.

4. Construct

On the first day of construction, your project team will meet with you on-site to review the project scope, answer any final questions, and ensure everyone is aligned before work begins.

Throughout construction, your Project Manager will coordinate trades, monitor progress, and provide regular updates as your addition takes shape.

5. Enjoy

Your new addition is complete, and it's time to enjoy a space that seamlessly blends with your home.

Designed with your vision in mind and built with quality craftsmanship ,your new addition provides the comfort, functionality, and room to grow that your family will enjoy for years to come.
